Sunset at Scheveningen – North Sea & Offshore Wind is a gouache painting inspired by a summer evening at Scheveningen Beach in the Netherlands, where the North Sea, people and offshore wind become part of the same landscape.
There are places where the ocean is not just a landscape, but a presence.
Scheveningen Beach became that place for me while living in The Hague. It was where I returned again and again to walk, swim and simply spend time by the sea. The North Sea became part of my everyday life in a way that extended far beyond my professional work.
Professionally, I spent years thinking about the ocean through offshore wind and marine biodiversity, yet I rarely entered the water. Outside work, the opposite happened: I swam, walked along the shoreline and watched the changing light over the sea. This painting brings together those two ways of experiencing the same ocean.
The artwork is based on a photograph I took during the summer of 2025 at Scheveningen Beach. Rather than reproducing the original colors, I explored a limited palette of greens, blues and purples while carefully maintaining the balance of values. This color exercise, developed during the Complete Illustration Program at Casatinta under the guidance of Andrés Kal, became an opportunity to reinterpret a familiar landscape through color while preserving its atmosphere.
On the horizon, the silhouettes of the Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm can be seen. It is also one of the offshore wind farms where Nature-Inclusive Design has been implemented on part of its turbine foundations, creating another connection between this landscape and my professional work in marine biodiversity and offshore wind.
In 2026, this artwork was exhibited during the presentation of the draft Socio-environmental and Marine Spatial Planning Report for Offshore Wind Energy in Colombia, organized by EEMa Colombia (Colombian Offshore Wind Association). Presenting this piece in that context reflected something central to my artistic practice: science helps us understand the ocean, while art helps us care about it.
As an artist inspired by biodiversity, I create ocean-inspired and nature-inspired art that connects science, biodiversity, offshore wind and visual storytelling.
