Vertical Journey Through the Ocean was created as an artistic exploration of the ocean’s water column.
The composition features three marine animals positioned at different symbolic depths: a jellyfish near the surface, a cuttlefish in midwater, and a shark inhabiting deeper waters. Rather than representing the exact biological distribution of these species, the painting uses depth as a visual language to explore movement, coexistence and the vastness of the ocean.
As a biologist, I have always been fascinated by how the ocean changes with depth and how each layer supports different forms of life. This artwork grew from that way of seeing the ocean—not simply as a landscape, but as a dynamic ecosystem organized into multiple layers.
This triptych also marked an important turning point in my artistic practice. Until then, I usually began my paintings on white canvases. Inspired by conversations with another artist, I experimented for the first time with colored backgrounds, allowing those initial layers to become an active part of the final composition. That simple change transformed my painting process and opened new creative possibilities.
The artwork is now part of a private collection in the United States.
This piece reflects my practice of transforming scientific concepts into visual experiences that inspire curiosity about the ocean and biodiversity.
