Armored Fish in Motion

This fish, swimming gracefully through the water, displays a beautiful flexible armor that covers even its eyes while leaving its fins completely free. The illustration is based on a photograph of a female Poeciliopsis gracilis, a species I worked with during my PhD. As it moves, it generates an elegant trail known as a von Kármán vortex.
